Destroyed Jeans Project

With lots of nieces and nephews visiting this holiday season, it was fun to take them to the studio. I like it when projects there evolve on their own momentum. After spending an afternoon at the mall looking at $140 Abercrombie destroyed jeans, Sol and Heather decided to buy $7.95 jeans and create their own.

After using a top secret assortment of Russ's power tools and bleach, Heather got the great idea to cut her name out of denim to stitch on her jeans.

They did the cutting, and I took the side seams apart so I could free-motion-quilt the lettering down the side. After Sol's jeans are washed again, they will fray like Heather's.

What surprised me was that Sol found a box of my cast-offs and wanted them quilted on the back of his jeans. And the best part about the project was when my seam-ripper accidently gouged a big hole in his jeans, it didn't matter a bit.

Sounds like this will be a visit they'll always remember. Yay for creative aunts!!
I love your shelving area...what kind of shelves are those? They look so neat and I'm hunting for replacements now.
Happy New Year to you!

The AF jeans are sinful. Seriously. I can not thing a more irresponsible purchase than $100+ torn, dirty jeans. (Ok, I probably could think of more irresponsible, but you know what I mean.) The hand-destroyed jeans are awesome! When I first saw the little creatures added to the back, I assumed they would be Heather's. How delightful that Sol is so enlightened. I bet there was lots of laughing. What a great aunt you are!

They are actually shelves that I got at an auction of grocery store fixtures. I bought the whole video and floral department for $200!

It was worth it just for the shelving, but I also got countertops and cabinets that I made into a sewing desk. And there's more in storage that I haven't used yet.

those jeans you linked to were $198!!! Unreal. I wouldn't wear those jeans to clean out my sewer line! Yours are much MUCH nicer. What a good idea!

What fun all seem to have had. The ideas are top notch. Funny thing, my husband just cleaned out his old jeans and left me a large pile to play with. Great timing wouldn't you say? I am thinking of putting a jean mosaic on something. First I need to figure out a design suitable for a 2 color (jeans and backgrounds) piece. Kudos all.

I see lots of "destroyed jeans" on campus and I had no idea they cost so much. Silly me, I thought they were just typical poor college student attire.

What great memories you are making, not to mention a little life lesson about being creative. Bravo!. Jen

My son was wearing a pair of khakis that were torn and had paint on them and I told him to put on a better pair of pants and he told me they were brand new and his favorite pants. And I thought the hip hugging bell bottoms of the 70's were bad (well I thought they were awesome when I wore them). The kids look like they are having a wonderful time... neat idea! Happy New Year!!

Totally cool auntie project. And by the way, be glad you are far far-flung from Maine, or I might have to come in the night and steal your cabinets and stash! Color me green with envy LOL!

Cheers, Sarah
