Annual Planning Retreat

This is where we've been for the last two days -- holed up in a little cabin in the woods. So nice that it snowed for our adventure, the only snow we've had this year! Made the whole thing more romantic.

Russ and I always take a little retreat early each year to examine our lives and goals. The first day we start by reviewing the previous year accomplishments and financial stuff. The second day we look at our artistic dreams and commitments, also personal and family trips we want to take. This year I typed up a calendar of important dates - it may be one of our busiest years in a while.

We've been doing this retreat every year since the early 90's, and it's taught me a lot about the difference between important and urgent things. Every day we are all pressed to respond to urgent things, but sometimes they are not the important things. Important things usually don't knock at the door or come in your email box. They are things that you choose to define yourself and are your compass in life. And sometimes it's good to check that compass, especially in the partnership of marriage.

What a good idea. I've been married a long time and we never really talk about these things. He just goes to work and I just mosey along the artistic path and we have a vegetable garden. We don't have goals or plans or dreams or even vacation ideas. Well, we do plan to grow fewer cucumbers this year.

wow! love the retreat idea...I have to be honest though, the first thing I thought of when I saw the picture was the song of my junior high camping years..."little cabin in the woods, little man by the window stood, saw a bunny hopping by, frightened as can be, 'help me! help me! help!' he cried, 'lest the hunter shoot me dead.' Little bunny come inside, safely to abide." from there the variations took on sillier proportions..."monster cabin in the woods..." I'm sure that this ear worm will be in my head all day.

Two artists - this is so cool - and it shows that Russ takes your work as seriously as his own. I will look forward to your year playing out and seeing you in Portland!

Actually I made the cabin look very secluded, but the truth be known, it's at Big Cedar Lodge and they even have room service! So you can sit by the fire (burning with logs that are replenished daily) and munch on prime rib.

A really good idea. I wonder if I can convince my partner to try this... he usually resists my attempts at planning for some reason.
Cheers

We've always believed in taking time out for from our busy lives for each other, but the planning aspect is something I never considered. Great idea. Jen

This is a fantastic way to set goals. I too am going on a similar retreat in March with my team at work to do the same thing. Three days of intensive brainstorming and teamwork laying out our department and company goals for the entire year. I've never tried this with my husband though but will give it a whirl!
